History

The Mount Calvary Center for Leadership Development was developed through a group of leaders of Mount Calvary University. Several southeastern North Carolina grassroots community leaders came to the university seeking help to train and promote competent and aggressive local leadership. Historically, many communities have had to address many challenges but lack an abundance of trained leadership aimed at their interests. The university accepted the challenge and immediately began to develop, Mt. Calvary Center for Leadership Development, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.

The Center serves mostly low income and rural communities with high unemployment and low educational achievement. There are several who desire leadership positions, but most lack the skills for leadership. This is not because of a lack of aptitude but the lack of training. We believe that training at the grassroots level will enhance the quality of leadership who in turn will enhance the overall status for a community that has been locked out of the equation.

The Mt. Calvary Center for Leadership Development mission is to educate, enable, and prepare grassroots persons to become better individuals and advocates for economic, political and social change for the betterment of the community.

Our Mission Statement

The Center for Leadership Development will train first responders such as community, civic and church leaders, fire fighters, law enforcement officers, and medical staff. In addition, we will train church leaders and community activists. The Center will train leaders in the proper manner to conduct meetings, parliamentary procedures, governmental meeting protocol, effective communication skills, both in oral and in writing, civic engagement and many more areas. The Center will address literacy as there is a need to develop and improve the literacy achievement throughout the region.

At the successful ending of the leadership training series, the Center will provide Certificates of Completion as we prepare the next wave of work force leaders, grass-root leaders, church and civic leaders and community societal change agents. We will give a voice to the voiceless and we will not only be involved in education, but in cutting edge research that will positively effect these communities, from health care disparities to civic engagement, and effect responses to natural disasters that have greatly affected these communities for the past two years. These fundamental concepts aligns with the mission of the Mt. Calvary Center for Leadership Development mission to educate, enable, and prepare grassroots persons to become better individuals and advocates for economic, political and social change for the betterment of the community.
